Spring is not far away and your camellias should still be blooming their heads off!  When we move into mid to end of March, the camellias will begin tapering off but there’s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy the blooms!

Here are a few things you should be doing now in the Camellia Garden In Savannah!

Keep your plants hydrated.  Plants may begin to start to grow soon as warm weather approaches and you want them to have adequate moisture.

It’s a bit early to be fertilizing with traditional fertilizers, but if you are using Holly-Tone™ or other organics, it’s probably safe to use those.  We carry fertilizers including Holly-Tone™, Bio-Tone™ and Milorganite for your gardening at Gene’s Nursery.

Pruning If Necessary

It’s usually recommended to prune after the plants bloom.  Since some camellias bloom in the fall, it’s not a good idea to prune those in the winter. So rather than prune after bloom, we like to suggest pruning in early spring – usually right before spring flush.  A good time to that is in March.  Of course, if your plants are still blooming in March, you can wait, but don’t wait too long.

Weed Control

You should begin thinking about your spring weed control way before you have weeds, and that’s hard to do when the weather is cold and dreary.  March is the perfect time to start planning for your weed control in the garden.  Applying pre-emergent herbicides or a good layer of mulch is recommended.  It’s easier to prevent than to treat!

Oil Treatments For Insects

You should begin thinking about your insect control plan in March.  We recommend that you spray for Tea Scale, Mites & Aphids after danger of frost has passed.  That’s usually mid to end of March in Savannah.  We suggest you use an All Seasons Horticultural Oil or Neem Oil for controlling Insects.  Aphids can be controlled using oil or a soap spray.  All Seasons Horticultural Oil and Hose-on sprayers are available at Gene’s Nursery for purchase!
